Wang Taiyuan lived in the late Ming Dynasty, and his courtesy name was Jinren.

As recorded in Jingai Xindeng (The Lamp in the Golden Hut): His original surname was Zhu, and he was the youngest son of the Prince of Tang of the Ming Dynasty, born to Jiang Diandian, one of the Prince’s imperial concubines.

When Jiang Diandian was seven months pregnant, the Prince of Tang was killed. She fled to Yunnan and lived in seclusion on Jizu Mountain.

When Wang Taiyuan was seven years old, his mother Jiang Diandian passed away, and he was taken in by the Jizu Daozhe (the Daoist of Jizu Mountain, referring to Huang Shouzhong mentioned in previous contexts). When he grew up, he was given the name Wang Taiyuan. He studied Taoism on Laoshan Mountain, and after mastering Taoist teachings, he wandered and traveled in the regions of Chu and Xiang (roughly covering present-day Hubei, Hunan, and parts of neighboring provinces).

Wang Taiyuan was tall with unusually large toes, so he was also known as the "Immortal with Big Feet."

He subsisted on stone grains (a type of wild grain or mineral-based food associated with Taoist ascetics) and avoided contact with other people, his whereabouts always remaining secretive.

He belonged to the Xinzong (Mind Sect) branch of the Longmen Sect (Dragon Gate Sect) of Taoism.
