The Wang Tan 王探
Paul PengShare
Wang Tan (214 BC–123 BC), a native of Taiyuan in the Western Han Dynasty, styled Yangbo and also Caicai.
According to records in The Comprehensive Mirror of True Immortals Through the Ages Who Embodied Taoism (Volume 9), The Stele of the Biographies of Louguan's Ancestor Masters, and The Pearl of the Immortal Garden, in his youth, he once served the Han Dynasty as a Zhongchangshi (a court eunuch official) and Zhonglang (a military officer), and he delved deeply into the fundamental principles of Taoism.

Due to Empress Lü's monopolization of state power, he retreated to seclusion at Louguantai in the Southern Mountains. There, he encountered Mr. Zhao, who taught him the inner cultivation techniques of the Huangting Jing (Yellow Court Classic) and the prescription for Zexie Pills (Alisma Pills) to practice Taoist methods. He also met Xiling Zidu, who imparted to him the way of "hiding the scenery and recording the form" (a Taoist practice of spiritual cultivation).
In the sixth year of Yuanshuo during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han (123 BC), he attained Taoism and ascended to immortality at the age of ninety-one. He was conferred the title of Taiji Zhenren (True Person of the Supreme Ultimate) and attained the position in the Dayou Palace.
