The Wang Xiuhu 王袖虎

Wang Xiuhu was a native of Sichuan Province in the early Qing Dynasty.

As recorded in The Golden Lid and the Lamp of the Heart (a key text on the lineage of the Quanzhen School of Taoism), he joined the military in his early years. Though he achieved numerous military exploits, he received no rewards for his contributions. Thus, he withdrew from public life and took refuge in Mount Lao, where he studied under Taoist Master Guan Tianxian. Later, he became a disciple of Taoist Li Pengtou (also known as "Jizu Daoren," meaning "Taoist of Jizu Mountain"). Li taught him the Maoshan Prayer Rituals, and Wang then engaged in Taoist cultivation on Jizu Mountain.

Wang Xiuhu was known for often keeping two tigers in his sleeves. When he first took them out, the tigers were as small as kittens; once released, they grew into giant tigers. When he put them back into his sleeves, they shrank to their original small size again. For this reason, people of his time called him "Wang Xiuhu" (literally "Wang with Tigers in Sleeves," a name that references this extraordinary ability).

In the 33rd year of the Qianlong reign (1768), Wang went to Jingen Mountain and studied under Taoist Preceptor Chen Qiaoyun. Afterward, he traveled around the country as a wandering Taoist.

He was a representative figure of the "Xinzong" (Heart Sect) branch of the Longmen Sect (a major branch of the Quanzhen School of Taoism).
