Wang Yan was a native of Hedong (now part of Shanxi Province) during the Tang Dynasty, styled Fuyuan. His ancestors originally lived in Taiyuan and later moved to Hedong. He became a Taoist monk at Jingyuan (Jing Taoist Compound) in Yongle County.

He advocated the integration of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. The Stele of the Divine Path of Lord Wang, Former Provincial Governor of Guozhou in the Great Tang Dynasty records that he once wrote works on Taoist thought, including Daoyi (Wings of Taoism), a fifty-volume text.
