The Wang Zhichang 王志常

Wang Zhichang (1162-1190) was a native of Shuimali in Xishan, Xiurong County during the Jin Dynasty, which is now Xinxian County, Shanxi Province. He styled himself "Daoist Hengxin" (Daoist of Persevering Mind).

In his youth, while herding cattle in the fields, he encountered a Daoist priest who took him westward. They arrived in Jiyuan County, where they stayed at Yangtai Taoist Temple, and Wang Zhichang was kept there as an acolyte in charge of incense offerings.
Eight years later, when he returned home, both his parents had passed away. Thus, he entered Tianqing Taoist Temple, became a disciple of Wang Dayong, and was initiated as a Daoist monk.

Wang Zhichang had a sincere and kind nature. He wore simple Daoist robes and did not let worldly troubles weigh on his mind; he was fond of reading historical records and biographies. In his daily life, he devoted himself to studying medical techniques and prescription skills, which he used to save people’s lives.

He passed away due to illness in the first year of the Mingchang era (1190) at the age of 29.

Detailed accounts of his life can be found in Epitaph of Reverend Wang from Tianqing Temple (Volume 31 of Yishan Collection) by Yuan Haowen, a renowned literatus of the Jin-Yuan period.
