Wang Zhishun was a native of Yidu (now part of Shandong Province) in the early Yuan Dynasty.

He styled himself "Yuanchenzi" (Master Beyond Worldly Dusts). He studied under the Taoist Zhenren (True Person) Yao Anran (also known as Yao Zhixu) at Lezhen Hermitage in Donghai County. As recorded in Records of Baiyun Wuhua Palace: During the Zhongtong reign period (1262), Wang Zhishun took refuge from the chaos in Shandong and resided with his teacher at Mount Yishan in Zou County.

By nature, he was unadorned and indifferent to secular pursuits, devoting himself entirely to accumulating merits and practicing virtuous deeds.

In the first year of the Zhida reign (1308), Prince Shou heard of his reputation, admired his noble virtues and lofty Taoist practice, and specially conferred upon him the title of "Yuanchen Tongmiao Chunde Zhenren" (True Person of Beyond Worldly Dusts, Profound Wonder, and Pure Virtue).

In the third year of the Yanyou reign (1316), the "Shenxian Yandao Dazongshi" (Grand Master of Immortal Dao Propagation) and "Xuanmen Zhangjiao Kaixuan Zhenren" (True Person of Opening Mystery, Leader of the Mysterious Gate Taoism) renamed the Baiyun Cave (which Wang Zhishun had built) to Baiyun Wuhua Palace, and specially bestowed upon him the title of "Yizhen Tongjiao Dashi" (Great Master of Authenticity and Universal Teaching).

Wang Zhishun, together with his disciple Zhang Zhiming, carved woodblocks for the Tao Te Ching (with gold-inlaid characters) and the "Five Classics for Taoist Temples" (a collection of core Taoist scriptures used in temple rituals). These woodblocks were passed down within the Taoist community for the reproduction and dissemination of the scriptures.
