Wang Zhongli was a figure at the end of the Southern Song Dynasty. His courtesy name was Dingmin, and his literary name was Zu'an.

From childhood, he was fond of reading, and he was intelligent and thoughtful. When he grew up, he admired those who lived a transcendent life (Taoist priests or hermits beyond secular affairs), so he became a Taoist monk at Tongbai Temple.
Within a few years, his reputation in the Taoist community grew day by day, and he served as the abbot of Taiyi Palace in Hangzhou.

During the reign of Emperor Lizong of the Song Dynasty, he was summoned to the imperial capital by imperial edict and was bestowed with the Taoist title "Zhenren of Benevolence, Tranquility, Purity and Simplicity" (Renjing Chunsu Zhenren).
