The Wang Zuan 王纂

The Wang Zuan 王纂

Paul Peng

Wang Zuan

A native of Jintan (now part of Jiangsu Province) during the Eastern Jin Dynasty.
He lived in seclusion on Mount Maji.
From a young age, he often performed hidden acts of merit to help all living beings.
During the late Eastern Jin Dynasty, the Central Plains were torn apart by wars, and plagues broke out concurrently, leaving the common people in extreme hardship. In response, Wang Zuan went to a quiet chamber, where he wrote and presented a memorial to Heaven (a Taoist ritual of submitting prayers to divine beings) while weeping incessantly.
He claimed to have received the Zhenren Tangping Shenkuang Jing (Scripture of the Divine Condition of the True Person Tang Ping) and the "Essentials of the Three-Five Great Retreat Ritual" (also known as Taishang Dongyuan Shenkuang Jing, Scripture of the Divine Condition from the Profound Abyss of the Supreme Lord) from the Supreme Lord of the Dao. He propagated these teachings and rituals south of the Yangtze River (Jiangbiao), saving countless people; from then on, the plagues no longer occurred.
Accounts of his deeds can be found in Zhaijie Lu (Records of Retreats and Precepts) and Volume 28 of Lishi Zhenxian Tidao Tongjian (Comprehensive Mirror of True Immortals and Practitioners Through the Ages).
