The Weng Taiyi 翁太宜
Paul PengShare
Weng Taiyi (1628–1698) was a native of Tiaoxi, Zhejiang Province, during the early Qing Dynasty.
His Taoist titles were Chaoyang and Woyun. From a young age, he was erudite; as he grew older, he indulged in a life of tranquility and purity (a core pursuit in Taoism).
He was skilled in caoshu (cursive script) and lishu (official script, two major styles of Chinese calligraphy), and proficient in composing poetry and fu (a literary form combining prose and verse, often descriptive and lyrical).

From his youth to adulthood, he did not seek fame or recognition. He once studied at Chaoyang An (Chaoyang Hermitage) on Jingshan Mountain (Golden Canopy Mountain), and his devotion to Taoist teachings was particularly sincere. In his prime, he lived in poverty. At the age of fifty, upon hearing of the reputation of Lü Yunyin, a Taoist Lvshi (Precept Master), he became Lü’s disciple and received the Three Major Precepts (the core precept system of Taoism, including Chuzhen Precepts, Zhongji Precepts, and Tianxian Precepts).
At the age of sixty, he went to Jiashan, where he presided over the lecture platform at Changchun Gong (Eternal Spring Taoist Palace). A large number of people came to study poetry, calligraphy, and literary writing under him.
He had a close friendship with Tao Shian, and thus frequently traveled to and from Jingshan Mountain.
In the third month of the 37th year of the Kangxi reign (1698), he passed away at the age of seventy-one. His works, such as Taoyuan Fu (Rhapsody on the Peach Blossom Spring), Xuexi Fu (Rhapsody on the Snowy Stream), and Chunxue Fu (Rhapsody on the Spring Snow), were circulated and preserved for later generations.
