The Western India Mind Sect 西竺心宗

Paul Peng
Xizhu Xinzong (Western India Mind Sect), a branch of the Longmen Sect of Quanzhen Taoism.
It was initiated by Jizu Daozhe, the 8th generation of the Longmen Sect, with Mount Jizu in Yunnan as its dissemination center. According to Biography of Master Huang, the Preceptor of Jizu, Volume 6 of The Lamp of the Golden Cover, Jizu Daozhe came from Yuezhi (an ancient Central Asian people) and resided on Mount Jizu in Yunnan. He called himself Yetan Posa, which means "a seeker of Tao" in Chinese. He was proficient in the magical arts of Western India and claimed to be the 100th generation of "Xizhu Xinzong". In the 16th year of the Shunzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1659), he went to the capital to pay homage to Wang Changyue, who bestowed upon him the name Huang Shouzhong, thus making him the 8th-generation disciple of the Longmen Sect.

Biography of Master Min, the second volume of The Transmission of the Daoist Orthodoxy of the Jueyun Branch, states that in the 55th year of the Qianlong reign (1790), Min Yide took the book of the great precepts passed down by Wang Changyue to Mount Jizu. Huang Shouzhong was still alive at that time. Min Yide gave the book of the great precepts to Huang, and Huang taught Min Yide the secret techniques of magical arts. After returning, Min compiled them into Twelve Volumes of the Great Brahma Primordial Sanskrit Mantras for Magical Duels.

The "Xizhu Xinzong" passed down by Huang Shouzhong was actually a school of Buddhist esotericism within Taoism. Its practices mostly adopted the "cloud seal characters" of the Taoist talisman school and the "true words (mantras)" of Buddhism, with a strong flavor of Buddhist esotericism. Most of his disciples were eccentric figures in the Jianghu (martial arts world) with extraordinary skills.

It is recorded that Huang Shouzhong passed on his teachings to Guan Tianxian (with the sect name Taiqing), who then passed them on to Jin Huaihuai (Wang Qingchu) and Li Baima. Jin Huaihuai taught Huosiren (Yun Dabian, whose original surname was Wang), Li Chijiao, and Shi Zhaoshanren (Zhang Daheng). Huosiren passed on to Zhuzhusheng (Guo Yangxiao), who was the 12th generation of the Longmen Sect. Huang also taught Da Jiao Xian and Wang Xiuhu; Da Jiao Xian taught Zhang Pengtou, who in turn taught Longmen Daoshang (Guo Laicheng) and Li Pengtou, among others. The inheritance after the 12th generation is unknown.
