The Wu Chengde 武诚德

Wu Chengde, a native of Datong, Shanxi during the Republic of China period, once served as a minor official in Yihua Town.

Later, he became a Taoist Priest on Hengshan Mountain and studied under Fang Zongqian. Subsequently, he went to Lushan Mountain, raised funds to build Baiyun Temple, which was completed after several years of efforts.

He traveled around famous mountains across the country and returned to live in seclusion at Ercheng Rock on Lushan Mountain a few years later.

Before long, he went to Hubei Province and took up the post of Xunzhao (Inspector) at Changchun Temple.

In the 18th year of the Republic of China (1930), he organized disaster relief for Taoist monasteries. His wise plans and outstanding achievements earned him universal admiration and respect.

Chengde was fond of engaging in public welfare undertakings. He submitted numerous petitions to the Executive Yuan and the Ministry of the Interior of the Central Government, requesting the renovation of civil and military sage temples nationwide, reclamation of wastelands to develop agriculture, harnessing of the Huaihe River, worship of the Five Great Mountains and Four Great Rivers, and memorial ceremonies for sages of all dynasties. All these proposals were adopted by the government.
