The Wu Fatong 吴法通
Paul PengShare
Wu Fatong (825-907) was a native of Danyang in Runzhou (present-day Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu Province) during the late Tang Dynasty.
He was well-versed in Confucianism and gifted in literary creation. However, he failed in the imperial examination for scholars. Later, he went to Mount Mao, where Sun Zhiqing initiated him into Taoism and imparted all the Taoist scriptures and doctrines to him.

In the second year of the Qianfu era of Emperor Xizong of the Tang Dynasty (875), the emperor sent envoys to confer the Dadong Zhu (Great Cavern Talisman, a core esoteric talisman in the Shangqing School of Taoism) upon him, honored him as a "Dushi" (Initiating Master), and bestowed upon him the title "Xian Sheng Xiwei" (Master of Subtle Mystery).
He passed away in the fourth year of the Tianyou era (907) at the age of 83. The imperial court posthumously appointed him as "National Teacher of the Tang Dynasty, Master Xiwei".
He was the 17th patriarch of the Shangqing School (Supreme Purity School) of Taoism at Mount Mao.
