Xia Yuanding was a native of Yongjia (now Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province) during the reign of Emperor Lizong of the Southern Song Dynasty.

His courtesy name was Zongyu, and he adopted the literary names "Yunfeng Sanren" (Recluse of the Cloudy Peaks) and "Xicheng Zhenren" (True Person of the Western City).
In his youth, he entered official service as a "Tongzilang" (a junior imperial official position for young scholars) and was skilled in swordsmanship. When he was a young adult, he joined the military staff office of the Ministry of War in Shandong, traveling between Shandong and Hebei regions.

Later, because his official career did not align with his aspirations, he withdrew from public life to study Taoism, practicing asceticism in seclusion on Mount Heng for more than ten years.

He was proficient in "Danfa" (Taoist alchemy techniques) and the skills of "shouqi huanfan" (retaining vital energy and returning to the original state of vitality). He lived to the age of eighty-nine. His works include Cui Gong Ruyao Jing Jian (Annotations on Master Cui’s Mirror for Entering the Elixir), Wuzhen Pian Jiangyi (Lectures on the Awakening to Reality), and Yinfu Jing Jiangyi (Lectures on the Classic of the Hidden Symbol).
