The Xie Qinghan 谢清涵

Xie Qinghan (1635—1732), a native of Wujin, Jiangsu Province, lived in the early Qing Dynasty. His courtesy name was Shenzhai and his literary name was Binyang.

He was recommended as a "Xiaolian" (a person of virtue and talent) three times. In the tenth year of the Kangxi reign (1681), he converted to Mingyangzi (a Taoist master) at Jinge Mountain. Due to his impulsive and unruly temperament, he was given the name "Qinghan" (implying clarity and restraint). From then on, he made deliberate efforts to restrain himself. Later, he traveled around Sichuan and Guizhou provinces and returned after several years.
In the fortieth year of the Kangxi reign (1701), Zhou Tailang, recognizing that Xie had attained perfection in his Taoist practice, formally conferred the "Three Great Precepts" (a set of core Taoist precepts) upon him.

Xie Qinghan passed away in the tenth year of the Yongzheng reign. He was buried on Ma'anshan Mountain and lived to be 98 years old.

He was a Vinaya Master of the 10th generation of the Longmen School (a major branch of Quanzhen Taoism).
