The Xin Yuan 辛愿

Xin Yuan was a native of Pingyang, Hedong (now part of Shanxi Province) during the Jin Dynasty, and his courtesy name was Xisheng.

He became a Taoist monk in his early years, paid respects to and studied under the Real Person Wang Yuyang, and was taught the essential Taoist doctrines by him. Wang Yuyang composed a great many verses and hymns for propagating Taoism; among his works, there was a chapter of five-character long poems titled Jindan Shi Jue (Poetic Maxims on the Golden Elixir), which Xin Yuan kept privately for a long time, and no one else in the world knew of its existence back then.

In his later years, Xin Yuan settled in Shanzhou under a concealed identity and built Lingxu Guan (Lingxu Temple) there to reside in. Considering that he was already old and frail, he thought the profound and abstruse writings of his late master should not remain secret forever, so he had the text engraved on a stone stele to pass it down to later generations.
