Xu Dingci was a native of Pengzhou (now Peng'an County, Sichuan Province) during the Northern Song Dynasty.
Chen Tuan gave him alchemical elixirs and secret teachings. After that, Xu Dingci returned to his hometown, where he chiseled a stone chamber in Nanshan (South Mountain) to reside in and devoted himself to Taoist cultivation.

He lived to the age of ninety-three.
