The Xu Taiyi 徐太一

The Xu Taiyi 徐太一

Paul Peng
Xu Taiyi was a native of Jiashan in Jiaxing (now part of Zhejiang Province) during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. His courtesy name was Xiangsheng, and his literary name was Genyang.
As recorded in Jingai Xindeng (The Lamp of the Heart at Golden Canopy): "Taiyi read all kinds of books and was extremely proficient in all sorts of crafts and skills. He studied under Master Lü Yunyin, a Taoist precept master, and successively received the three levels of Taoist precepts. After that, he chose to keep a low profile and conceal his virtues, so very few people in the Taoist community knew about him."
