The Xu Yizheng 徐一正

The Xu Yizheng 徐一正

Paul Peng
Xu Yizheng was a native of Dongting, Jiangsu Province, during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, and his courtesy name was Shengzong.

As recorded in Jingai Xindeng (The Lamp of the Heart at Golden Canopy): "In his early years, he was orphaned and impoverished. He studied but refused to pursue an official career. Later, he traveled through Guangdong and Fujian Provinces. Tired of the trivialities of secular life, he became a Taoist Priest and studied under Master Dai Tingyun, a Taoist precept master.

He was given the new name 'Yizheng' (literally 'Unified Rectitude'). He resided at Helin Taoist Abbey and moved between the Taoist communities of JINGAI and Jinzhu.

He had a profound understanding of the principles of human nature and heavenly reason, and maintained a calm and indifferent attitude toward material gains. His reputation in the Taoist community grew day by day, and he was admired by Taoist practitioners from all over the country."
