Paul Peng
Xu Zhichang, also known by his courtesy name Zizhong, was a native of Jianyang (now part of Fujian Province) at the end of the Northern Song Dynasty.

In his youth, he became a Taoist priest. He devoted himself to studying Taoist scriptures, and also had a broad knowledge of Confucian classics and history. He was skilled in writing poetry and prose, and proficient in painting.
His work Pictures of Divine Figures and Their Deeds (Xieshen Tashiji Tu) was regarded as a masterpiece of high quality. During the Xuanhe era (1119–1125 AD), he served as Shichen (a court Taoist official) in the Chongxu Dariushenzhu Palace. Later, he was promoted to Zuojie Daolu (a senior Taoist administrative position in charge of Taoist affairs in the left district of the capital). In the third year of the Zhenghe era (1113 AD), he was bestowed the title "Mr. Chongxu".
