The Xue Biaozhi 薛彪之

The Xue Biaozhi 薛彪之

Paul Peng
Xue Biaozhi was a native of Jinling during the Southern Dynasties (now Wujin District, Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, China).

He practiced Taoist elixir cultivation (a traditional Taoist practice of taking refined elixirs to pursue longevity and physical vitality). Though he was very advanced in age, his hair and beard remained black and lustrous, and his face was ruddy and glowing.
As recorded in Shangqing Dao Lei Shi Xiang (Classified Matters Concerning the Shangqing Dao) and San Dong Zhu Nang (Precious Treasury of the Three Grottoes): During the reign of Emperor Gao of the Qi Dynasty (479–482 AD), he went to Maoshan Mountain, built a thatched hut there to live in, and sustained himself on pine needles and mountain spring water for many years.
Emperor Gao sought out reclusive Taoist practitioners. Xue Biaozhi, however, remained committed to his aspiration of living in the mountains and had no regard for honor or official positions. The emperor therefore issued an imperial edict appointing him as the abbot of Jinling Guan (Jinling Taoist Temple) at his residence on Maoshan Mountain.
In the second year of the Jianwu era (495 AD), he traveled to Dongchuan to seek and collect rare Taoist scriptures and esoteric teachings, a journey that lasted three years.
Emperor Ming of the Qi Dynasty then issued an imperial edict to build Dongtian Guan (Dongtian Taoist Temple) on the eastern ridge of Mount Damao (the main peak of Maoshan Mountain), where Xue Biaozhi practiced Taoism.
He was a Taoist friend of Tao Hongjing (courtesy name Tao Yinju, a renowned Taoist scholar and alchemist) and Jiang Fuchu.
