The Xue Jichang 薛季昌
Paul PengShare
Xue Jichang was a native of Hedong (present-day Yongji County, Shanxi Province) during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty; some records also state he was from Mianzhu in Hanzhou.
He was born into an official family, but from an early age, he had no interest in fame and glory, and instead enjoyed traveling to mountains and rivers. As recorded in Volume 40 of Comprehensive Mirror of True Immortals Who Embodied the Dao Through the Ages: He once met Sima Chengzhen at Mount Heng (the Southern Great Mountain), who imparted to him the "Three Grottoes Scriptures and Tallies" (a core set of texts and ritual tokens in Taoism).

Xue Jichang studied these teachings with great dedication and diligence, never slacking off for a long time.
Emperor Xuanzong of Tang (also known as Emperor Minghuang) summoned him to the imperial court to discuss the principles of the Dao and virtue. Later, when Xue Jichang returned to the mountains, the emperor wrote poems and a preface for him as gifts.
He once authored The Profound Pivot of Dao and Virtue, a work that compiled the exquisite annotations of various scholars. Later, he successfully refined the alchemical elixir through cultivation, and passed away at Jiangsheng Taoist Temple.
