The Xue Ruji 薛汝积

Xue Ruji (?–1214) was a native of Jinling in Changzhou (now part of Jiangsu Province) during the Southern Song Dynasty.

His courtesy name was Defu; originally, his given name was Kezhao, with the courtesy name Mingfu. He served as the 34th Patriarch of the Maoshan Shangqing Sect.
As recorded in Volume 12 of Mao Shan Zhi (Records of Maoshan Mountain): "Xue Ruji was inherently simple and frugal in life. He had a particular passion for the I Ching (Book of Changes) and the teachings of Laozi and Zhuangzi (founders of Taoism). He shared a deep rapport with Xing Rujia (the 33rd Patriarch). More than twenty years later, he finally inherited the sect’s orthodox lineage through his ties as a disciple and friend (of Xing Rujia)."

In the 6th year of the Jiading era (1213), Empress of Emperor Ningzong ordered Shangguan Deqin, the Zuojie Jianyi (Overseer of Rituals of the Left Street), to bring incense and silk gifts to receive the Dadong Bifa (Complete Methods of the Great Cavern)—a core esoteric practice of the Shangqing Sect. The empress also remotely honored Xue Ruji as her Dushi (Initiating Master) and held a grand Xiu Tian Dajiao (Heaven-Cultivating Grand Ritual).

In the twelfth lunar month of the following year (1214), Xue Ruji passed away. He was posthumously conferred the title "Mr. Chongxuan Mingyi" (Master of Profound Tranquility and Bright Unity).
