The Xue Yi 薛颐
Paul PengShare
Xue Yi was a native of Huazhou (present-day Huaxian County, Henan Province) during the Sui and Tang dynasties. In the Daye era (of the Sui Dynasty), he became a Taoist priest.
He was well-versed in astronomy, the calendar system, and the theory of musical temperament, and was particularly skilled in various forms of divination.
Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty invited him to the imperial Taoist sanctuary and ordered him to conduct Taoist ritual ceremonies (Zhangjiao).

As recorded in The Old Book of Tang · Biography of Xue Yi: In the early years of the Wude era (of the Tang Dynasty), Xue Yi had a close relationship with Li Shimin, the Prince of Qin (later Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty). During the Zhenguan era, he was repeatedly known for the accuracy of his divinations.
Later, he submitted a memorial to the emperor requesting to officially become a Taoist priest (to devote himself fully to Taoism). Emperor Taizong then ordered the construction of Zifu Guan (Zifu Taoist Temple) on Jiushan Mountain, appointed Xue Yi as Zhong Dafu (a mid-ranking official title in the Tang Dynasty), and assigned him to take charge of affairs at Zifu Guan.
