Xue Yingchang was a native of Guixi, Jiangxi, during the reigns of Emperors Lizong and Duzong of the Southern Song Dynasty.

His courtesy name was Wuyuan, and he was a Taoist priest of the Huncheng sect.
Orphaned at an early age, he showed even greater filial piety to his mother. During the Xianchun era (1265-1274), he was ordered by the imperial court to pray for rain, and the prayer proved effective. He was then officially appointed as the Supervisor of Taiyi Palace by imperial decree.

Later, he requested to return to the mountains and was appointed to oversee the affairs of the palace. After his death, Emperor Duzong issued an imperial order for him to be buried with formal rituals.
