Yan Chuchang (1110–1183) was a native of Yueyang County in Jingzhao (now part of Lintong County, Shaanxi Province) during the Jin Dynasty, and he went by the literary name Changqingzi.

In his childhood, he studied Confucian classics. After both his parents passed away, he went directly to Liujiang Village at Mount Zhongnan and paid respects to his maternal relative Wang Chongyang, taking him as his teacher.
Wang Chongyang taught him the secret principles of internal Taoist cultivation. Yan Chuchang then resided at Mount Zhongnan, resolutely devoting himself to Taoist practice. In the 10th year of the Dading era (1170), he further received verification and affirmation of his cultivation from Ma Danyang. He later lived in seclusion at the Ancestral Court (of the Quanzhen Sect) to pursue intensive practice, and spent the rest of his life there.

Accounts of his life can be found in the first volume of Inner Biographies of Immortal Sages from the Ancestral Court of Mount Zhongnan.
