The Yan Daoxing 严道性
Paul PengShare
Yan Daoxing lived during the late Five Dynasties and early Northern Song Dynasty, and his literary name was Jing’an.
He served as the Tongpan (an assistant magistrate in charge of administrative and judicial affairs) of Fuzhou (note: ancient place names may have multiple correspondences; here "Fuzhou" refers to the administrative region in the Five Dynasties and Northern Song Dynasty, roughly covering parts of modern Gansu or Sichuan). He had a keen interest in Taoist arts and established a Zunyuan (a hall or institute for Taoist activities, literally meaning "Hall of Obedience/Respect") to invite Taoist masters of profound attainments from all over the country to gather there.

At that time, Fang Pinle was spreading Taoist teachings in Fuzhou (a different Fuzhou from Yan Daoxing’s official post, referring to the region centered in modern Fuzhou, Jiangxi). Yan Daoxing treated Fang Pinle with the courtesy due to a teacher, and thus received the transmission of the "Great Tiaolao Method" (a core ritual of the Tianpeng School, used for relieving plagues and curing illnesses) from Fang.
