The Yang Fengzi 杨疯子

The Yang Fengzi 杨疯子

Paul Peng
Yang Fengzi was a native of Menghua Zhili Ting (Menghua Subprefecture, directly under provincial jurisdiction) in Yunnan during the early Qing Dynasty. He often wore tattered clothes and had unkempt hair, yet he was extremely filial to his mother.

As recorded in Xu Xiu Menghua Zhili Ting Zhi · Xianshi (Revised Gazetteer of Menghua Subprefecture · Immortals and Eminent Monastics), every time he went out, he carried his mother on his back to beg for food. When he got food, he would first offer it to his mother. After his mother finished eating, he would sing loudly, laugh freely, and pretend to be insane in the marketplaces. For this reason, people of his time called him "Fengzi" (the Madman).
