Yang Laiyi was a native of Yuhang (now part of Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province) during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty.

According to Jingai Xindeng (The Golden Cover and the Lamp of the Heart), he made a living by working with clay in his early years and was fond of practicing martial arts (boxing and cudgels). People at that time all held him in awe.
In the 45th year of the Qianlong reign (1780), admiring the reputation of Master Chen Qiaoyun, he went to Mount Jingai and stayed there for over a month. Later, Chen Qiaoyun advised him to become a disciple of Fu Fuxing in Wucheng.

He finally returned to Yuhang in the 50th year of the Qianlong reign (1785).

At that time, Chen Qiaoyun was in charge of Sanyuan Palace by South Lake. Due to the effectiveness of Chen's prayers for rain during a drought, Yang Laiyi regarded him as a divine figure and thus began to serve as an attendant at Sanyuan Palace. His cultivation in Taoism progressed day by day.

He once said, "Propriety and righteousness are amulets for protection; benevolence and trustworthiness are medicines for self-cultivation. Being fond of bravery and provoking fights will only bring disaster upon oneself." Consequently, he secretly converted to Taoism.
