The Yang Lixin 杨理信

Yang Lixin (c. 1385) was a native of Mengyin County, Tai'an Prefecture, Shandong, in the early Ming Dynasty.

His courtesy name was Daxiu, and his literary name was Guiyuanzi.

In his middle age, he managed his family business and lived a busy, routine life. Later, he gained insight from the transformation of crickets and moths (a metaphor for the impermanence of life), and gradually developed unusual aspirations (toward Taoism).

A friend gave him the book Jindan Nanwen (The Difficult Inquiries on the Golden Elixir), which collected esoteric Taoist teachings. He read and studied it day and night.

Subsequently, he met Wang Zhenyi at Xianglin Temple, who taught him the essential formulas for the Golden Elixir.

At the age of 40, he followed Wang Zhenyi and converted to Taoism, eventually becoming the 5th-generation patriarch of the Nanwu School of Taoism. Details of his life can be found in Nanwu Daopai Zongpu (Genealogy of the Nanwu Taoist School).
