Yang Qiao was a native of Nan'an (now Jinjiang, Fujian Province) during the Five Dynasties period.
He possessed Taoist magical arts and was particularly skilled in divination, being able to foresee good and bad fortunes with clairvoyance. He was also proficient in medicine and helped numerous people in his daily life.

When the wife of Wang Shenzhi, King of Min, was critically ill, Yang Qiao cured her. Wang Shenzhi offered him abundant rewards, but Yang Qiao politely declined. Instead, he only requested to have a stream diverted to irrigate the farmland for the villagers. For this reason, the locals held him in high esteem.
