Yang Zhiyin was a native of Ezhou in the early Yuan Dynasty. His courtesy name was Kongjing. In his childhood, he left home on a wooden raft and traveled to the east of the Yangtze River. When he grew a little older, he entered Yuanfu Palace to become a Taoist monk. He loved reading; throughout his life, he would not go to sleep until midnight, when he finished reciting the Huangting Jing (Yellow Court Scripture) once.

He had an unusual appearance. He once met an extraordinary person who taught him the technique of summoning thunder and rain.
In the early Yuan Dynasty, he once performed Taoist rituals for Emperor Shizu of the Yuan Dynasty (Kublai Khan). Every time he was summoned to answer the emperor’s questions, his replies always satisfied the imperial will. He was simple and straightforward, never avoiding topics that were taboo at the time, yet Emperor Shizu treated him with tolerance and indulgence.

Before long, he begged to return to the mountains. He received an imperial edict (sealed with the imperial jade seal), settled in Mount Sanmao, and served as the abbot of Qianyuan Temple.

One day, he instructed his disciples and old friends to hold a Lingbao Retreat (a major Taoist ritual). He took out all the esoteric books he had collected and burned them. The next day, he lay down calmly and passed away.
