The Yang Zhongli 杨中立

Paul Peng
Yang Zhongli was a figure of the Yuan Dynasty.

His courtesy name was Yuanwei, and his literary name was Hai'ou (Sea Foam). He studied under Bu Zonghao and became a Taoist priest.

Volume Three of Records of Yuanmiao Temple states that in his youth, he entered Yuanmiao Temple, learned Taoist doctrines and rituals from Bu Zonghao, and became an orthodox successor of the Taiji Wulei Altar (an altar dedicated to Taoist rituals associated with the "Five Thunders" and Taiji).

Zhongli advocated a simple and plain lifestyle, and named his residence "Yizhi Chao" (A Branch Nest, implying a modest dwelling).

Zheng Yuanyou wrote a record that narrates his life story.

During the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1398), he took charge of the Daoji Si (the official administrative agency for Taoism in the Ming Dynasty, responsible for overseeing Taoist affairs in a designated region).
