Paul PengShare
Yao Jun was a native of Qiantang (now part of Zhejiang Province) during the Han Dynasty.

He initially studied at the Imperial College, where he mastered Confucian classics and was knowledgeable about anomalies and celestial omens. He served as the Prefect of Jiaozhi.
Volume 17 of Li Shi Zhen Xian Ti Dao Tong Jian (Comprehensive Mirror of True Immortals Through the Ages Practicing Taoism) states that in the late Han Dynasty, Yao Jun abandoned his family and went to Zengcheng Mountain to study Taoism. There, he encountered the hermit Dongguo Youping, who taught him the techniques of "Nine Refinements for Cultivating Qi" and "Assisting Stars in the Heart".
