Yao Xuan was a native of Jiangfu Village at Zhongnan Mountain during the Jin and Yuan dynasties, and his Taoist title was Yunyangzi (Master of Cloudy Yang).

He was related to Wang Chongyang by the "simma" degree of kinship (the fifth and most distant degree of mourning in traditional Chinese etiquette, indicating a distant paternal relative).
After Wang Chongyang passed away, Yao Xuan abandoned his secular family and received Taoist initiation from Ma Danyang, who imparted to him the profound and esoteric principles of cultivating the true self (a core concept in Taoism referring to spiritual refinement).

After obtaining the Taoist teachings, Yao Xuan dedicated himself to diligent practice for over a decade, attaining a profound mastery of the subtle essence of Taoism. Later, he followed Ma Danyang on his eastward journey back [to Ninghai] and traveled through the Cixian and Xiangzhou regions (covering parts of present-day Hebei and Henan provinces).

He was fond of the simple and sincere local customs in Fuyang (a historical region in present-day Hebei Province), so he built the Baiyun An (White Cloud Thatched Hut) and resided there to practice Taoism. He lived to the age of seventy-two.

He authored Po Mi Ji (Collection of Breaking Delusions), which was circulated among later generations.

Accounts of his life can be found in the first volume of Zhongnanshan Zuting Xianzhen Neizhuan (Inner Biographies of Immortal Sages from the Ancestral Court of Zhongnan Mountain).
