The Yin Shangshi 殷尚实

The Yin Shangshi 殷尚实

Paul Peng
Yin Shangshi (1366-1394) was a native of Raozhou during the Yuan Dynasty.

His Taoist name was Pianyang, and his literary name was Shangqing Zihui Sanren (a hermit with the title of "Purple Radiance from the Supreme Clarity"). He studied under Li Chengxian (Li Chengxian, i.e., Li Shimao mentioned earlier, whose courtesy name was Chengxian), from whom he learned the skills of Taoist talismans and prayer rituals. He was capable of summoning winds, bringing rain, performing the "Budou Tagang" ritual (a Taoist ritual of stepping on specific patterns to communicate with celestial beings), and expelling evil spirits. His reputation spread far and wide in Qiantang (present-day Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province).

Later, he met Cuimei Zhenren (Real Person Cuimei, a title for accomplished Taoists), who taught him Fuben Pian (Chapter of Restoration) by Zixia Zhenren (Real Person Purple Cloud) and the secret formulas for cultivating elixirs.

He authored Jixu Ci (Collection of Void Words) and dozens of volumes of poetry collections.
