The Yu Linghuang 俞灵璜
Paul PengShare
Yu Linghuang was a native of Hejian (a historical region now part of Hebei Province) during the reign of Emperor Xianzong of the Tang Dynasty.
He resided at the Jiuzhen Taoist Temple on Mount Heng to study Taoism for more than ten years. Later, he encountered Chijun of Nanyue (the Red Lord of the Southern Great Mountain), who imparted to him the "Dao of Whirling Wind" and the "Method of Guarding the Bright Beam" (core Taoist cultivation techniques).

After practicing these teachings for twenty years, he gained the ability to foresee future events.
During the Yuanhe era of Emperor Xianzong (806–820 AD), government officials in Chenzhou treated him with great respect, regarding him as a teacher.
In his later years, he secluded himself in seclusion and never went out. He and Pan Youyue were close friends who shared a love for the misty clouds and sunset glow (a metaphor for reclusive Taoist life, hence "friends of mist and glow").
