Yuan Sanquan was a native of Xiangfeng, Le'an (now part of Jiangxi Province) during the Ming Dynasty.

As recorded in Le'an Xian Zhi (Gazetteer of Le'an County), he possessed Daoist magical arts: when praying for rain or combating plagues, he would perform rituals with talismans and incantations, and all his acts manifested remarkable efficacy.

Later, he passed down his magical arts to Yuan Lejing, a fellow townsman of his.
