Yuan Zhiguo (1187–1276)

Yuan Zhiguo was a native of Xiantai Village in Mancheng (now Mancheng District, Baoding City, Hebei Province) during the Jin and Yuan dynasties. He held the literary name "Wuzhenzi" (the "Master of Awakening to Truth").

He had a gentle and unadorned nature, and refused to conform to vulgar social conventions. He built a small hermitage on Mount Gehong to practice Taoist cultivation, and studied under Master Cai Jiangyue (a revered Taoist master with the title "Zhenren," meaning "True Person").

Master Cai Jiangyue imparted to him the profound and subtle essence of Taoist doctrines. After that, Yuan Zhiguo never left the mountain—he lived on wild vetch he picked and made clothes from tree bark.

He passed away in the 13th year of the Zhiyuan era (1276) at the age of 90. Details of his life can be found in Jifu Tongzhi (Comprehensive Gazetteer of the Capital Region).
