Yuan Zongshan was a Taoist priest in Pingjiang during the Southern Song Dynasty.

According to Volume 3 of Records of Yuanmiao Taoist Temple, he once met an extraordinary person, from whom he obtained the "method of verifying manifestations" (a Taoist ritual or technique for verifying spiritual phenomena). This method proved quite effective, and he was thus bestowed with the title "Mr. Tongzhen" (Mr. Penetrating the True Dao).
Emperor Guangzong suffered from a mental illness, which Yuan Zongshan cured. In recognition of this, the emperor granted him generous rewards.
