The Yuanshi Shangzhen Zhongxian Ji 元始上真众仙记

Yuanshi Shangzhen Zhongxian Ji (Records of the Primordial Highest True Ones and All Immortals), also titled Zhenzhong Shu (The Pillow Book).

Originally attributed to Ge Hong, it is actually a work of the Shangqing School during the Northern and Southern Dynasties. Consisting of one roll, it is included in the Dongzhen (True Grotto) Section, Genealogy and Record Category of the Daozang (Taoist Canon).

As a Taoist immortal genealogy, this text outlines "the palaces and residences of true immortals and the origins of the highest sages."

At the beginning, it falsely claims that Ge Hong encountered the Supreme True King of Xuandu descending to earth one night in Luofu Mountain, who transmitted to him the "True Scripture" and "True Record."

The "True Scripture" mainly narrates the creation experience of the Primordial Heavenly King. It asserts that at the beginning of heaven and earth, the True Person Pangu titled himself the Primordial Heavenly King. After undergoing numerous kalpas, he united his vital energy with the Jade Maiden of Taiyuan to conceive the King of the East and the Queen Mother of the West, with the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors all being their descendants.

The "True Record" primarily records the duties, names, and residences of various immortals and true beings in heaven.

The immortals mentioned range from ancient true beings such as the Primordial Heavenly King, the King of the East, the Queen Mother of the West, and the Elder Guangcheng, down to emperors and sages including the Five Emperors, the Three Kings, Emperor Gaozu of Han, Emperor Guangwu of Han, Confucius, and Mozi, as well as Taoist figures like Zhang Daoling, Wang Zideng, Xu Lailai, and Lady Wei. The record concludes with the Eastern Jin Taoist priests Xu Mu and Xu Yufu.

The latter half of the text is roughly identical to Tao Hongjing’s Zhengao (True Declarations) and Zhenling Weiye Tu (Chart of the Ranks and Functions of True Spirits) from the Liang Dynasty, confirming that it was compiled by Taoist priests of the Shangqing School during the Northern and Southern Dynasties.
