Rite for Examining the Purple Record (Yue Zi Lu Yi) has an unknown author and was presumably compiled during the Northern and Southern Dynasties or the transition period between the Sui and Tang Dynasties.

Only one incomplete Dunhuang manuscript (P2457) survives today, containing 88 lines of the text. According to the colophon at the end of the manuscript, this copy was transcribed by the professional scribe Xu Zishun in the 23rd year of the Kaiyuan reign period (735 CE). The content of this text records the talisman-examining ritual of early Celestial Master Taoism. Practitioners recite and invoke the names of various administrative spirits, messengers, divine soldiers, and gods of the Purple Palace Jade Platform, praying for the remission of sins, exemption from misfortunes, and protection for themselves, their families, and their homes.
