The Zhang Boting 张柏亭

The Zhang Boting 张柏亭

Paul Peng

Zhang Boting was a figure of the early Ming Dynasty.

He styled himself "Hulu Daoist" (Taoist Gourd).

During the Yongle reign period, he was ordered by the imperial court to participate in the construction of Taoist temples on Wudang Mountain, and later responded to the imperial edict to reside at Xuantian Yuxu Palace.

He encountered an extraordinary person who taught him the esoteric Five-Thunder Magic, along with a gourd and a walking staff—items he would carry with him from then on.

Later, he served as the Daji (chief Taoist administrator) of Yuanmiao Temple in Quzhou.
