Zhang Cunyi (1751-1779) was the 57th Heavenly Master of the Zhengyi (Orthodox Unity) School of Taoism.

His courtesy name was Fangzhi, and his literary name was Yiting.

As recorded in Bu Tianshi Shijia (Supplement to the Genealogy of the Heavenly Masters) by Zhang Yuanxu: In the 31st year of the Qianlong reign (1766), at the age of 15, he inherited the position of Heavenly Master and went to the imperial capital to have an audience with the emperor. Because his prayer for rain was immediately answered, his official rank was promoted to the third grade (a senior official rank in the Qing Dynasty).

In the 34th year of the Qianlong reign (1769), he again went to the imperial capital for an audience with the emperor. He was ordered by the emperor to pray for snow, and the prayer proved effective—he was thus granted a Taoist crown and ritual robes as a reward.

In the 44th year of the Qianlong reign (1779), he passed away due to illness at the age of 28.

He had no sons. In his last memorial to the emperor, he requested that his paternal uncle (father’s cousin) Zhang Qilong be allowed to inherit the Taoist position and teaching authority permanently.
