Zhang Delong was a native of Guixi, Xinzhou during the Yuan Dynasty.
His courtesy name was Yuanjie, and he styled himself Huanxi.
He studied Taoism at Longhu Mountain, and later resided with his uncle, the Grand Master and Court Opener Zhang Liusun, and the Successor Master Wu Quanjie, at Chongzhen Wanshou Palace in the capital for as long as forty years.

He was summoned by the emperor on several occasions and by imperial decree to conduct sacrificial ceremonies on behalf of the court at various sites including sacred mountains, sea regions, Fenyin, and Mount Wudang.
In the 6th year of the Zhiyuan era (1270), he supervised the construction of Shangqing Zhengyi Palace on Mount Longhu.
Later, he was officially awarded the title "Chongzhen Mingyuan Xuanjing Zhenren" (True Person of Pure Tranquility, Bright Far-sightedness, and Profound Stillness).
