The Zhang Guo 张果

The Zhang Guo 张果

Paul Peng
Zhang Guo was a figure of the Tang Dynasty.
In his youth, he lived in seclusion on Zhongtiao Mountain and traveled between the regions of Fen and Jin (ancient names for areas in present-day Shanxi Province).
In the 21st year of the Kaiyuan era of Emperor Xuanzong (733), he was summoned to the imperial capital repeatedly, and the emperor consulted him on matters related to immortals.
The emperor intended to marry Princess Yuzhen to him, but Zhang Guo firmly declined.
He was conferred the title "Mr. Tongxuan" and promoted to the position of Silver and Azure Light Grand Master. Later, a Qixia Taoist Temple was built on Hengshan Mountain for him to reside in.

Zhang Guo is later known as "Zhang Guolao" (Elder Zhang Guo) in the folk legend of the Eight Immortals, and many stories about him have been passed down among the people.
