The Zhang Jingding 张静定

Zhang Jingding (?–1522) was a native of Yuhang, Zhejiang (now part of Hangzhou City) during the Ming Dynasty.

His original name was Zongren, and his courtesy name was Wowo.

As recorded in Jingai Xindeng (The Golden Canopy and the Lamp of the Heart), his family had been engaged in Confucian scholarship for generations, and he was proficient in the study of human nature and principles. During the Yongle reign period, he passed the imperial examination for "Mingjing" (a title for scholars well-versed in Confucian classics) but chose to live in seclusion instead of holding an official position, giving lectures by the Tiaoxi River. After his parents passed away, he abandoned his home to travel around, visiting virtuous and learned figures.

Later, he went to Tiantaishan Mountain and entered the Taoist order. He mastered The Eight-Yuan Yang Scripture and the secrets of alchemy, and produced many works—all of which were lost or destroyed. When he traveled to Qingcheng Mountain afterward, he met Zhou Yuanpu. Admiring Zhou’s noble virtue and moral character, he became Zhou’s disciple and later returned to Tiantaishan Mountain to live in seclusion again.

In the first year of the Jingtai reign (1450), Zhou Yuanpu sent his disciples to summon Zhang Jinging to Qingcheng Mountain, where he conferred the "Longmen Great Precepts" (a core set of precepts in the Longmen School of Taoism) on Zhang. Zhang Jinging passed away in July of the first year of the Jiajing reign (1522). He was recognized as the fifth-generation "Law Master" (a title for Taoists specializing in propagating precepts) of the Longmen School.
