Zhang Jiugai was a native of Mengshan (a historical region now part of Sichuan Province) during the reigns of Emperors Daizong and Dezong of the Tang Dynasty. His Taoist titles were "Hunlunzǐ" (Master of the Primordial Wholeness) and also "Yinju" (the Recluse).

He devoted himself to the study of Taoist outer alchemy (waidan) for more than twenty years and authored works including On Golden Stones and Spirit Sand and Essentials of the Zhuangzi.
