Zhang Jujian (?-1166) was a native of Taoyuan (another theory holds that he was from Suichang in Shajiang) during the early Southern Song Dynasty. His courtesy name was Silian, and he was commonly known as "Mr. Silian". In his youth, he was officially registered as a Taoist priest at Shouguang Palace and studied under Wang Qinglie.

He practiced the Great Lingbao Method. Zhang Jujian recited and revered the Lingbao Duren Jing (Lingbao Scripture for Delivering All Beings) every day, and through this practice, he attained enlightenment. He could predict good fortune and misfortune, so most people held him in high esteem and regarded him as extraordinary.
Every day, he would face the sun to practice tuna (Daoist breathing exercises for refining vital energy). He was also capable of bigu (a Daoist practice of abstaining from regular food to cultivate vitality), needing no ordinary food to sustain himself.
His cultivation of Daoist doctrines and techniques was profound and incisive: in scorching summer, he never sweated; in freezing winter, he never needed to wear fur-lined clothes.
