The Zhang Shizhen 张始珍

The Zhang Shizhen 张始珍

Paul Peng

Zhang Shizhen (?–504)

Zhang Shizhen, also recorded as Zhang Ruzhen in some sources, was a native of Xinyang in Nanyang (now Xinyang City, Henan Province) during the Southern Qi and Liang dynasties of the Southern Dynasties period. He resided on Nanyue (the Southern Mountain, one of China’s Five Great Mountains).
According to records in Comprehensive Mirror of Perfected Immortals and Practitioners of the Dao (Volume 33), he once encountered an immortal who descended to teach him the "Way of the Bright Mirror" (a Taoist cultivation method). After practicing this method for nine years, he achieved success and gained the ability to "see through to a thousand li away" (a Taoist description of clairvoyant or far-sighted spiritual power).
He passed away due to illness at Jiuxian Palace in the third year of the Tianjian era of the Liang Dynasty (504).
In the first year of the Chonghe era of Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty (1118), he was posthumously awarded the title "Perfected One of Complete Truth and Attainment of the Dao."
