The Zhang Shouzhen 张守真

Paul Peng
Zhang Shouzhen (?-1176) was the 32nd Heavenly Master of the Zhengyi School (Orthodox Unity School) of Taoism and the eldest son of Zhang Shixiu.
According to A Genealogy of the Heavenly Masters of the Han Dynasty, he succeeded to the position of Heavenly Master and took charge of the Taoist affairs in Longhu Mountain (Dragon-Tiger Mountain) as well as the Zhengyi School across the Jiangnan region in the 10th year of the Shaoxing era of the Song Dynasty (Note: The Gregorian calendar year for the 10th year of Shaoxing is 1140).

Every year, during the Three Yuan Festivals (the 15th day of the first lunar month, the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, and the 15th day of the tenth lunar month, important Taoist festivals), he presided over the rituals of "Chuanduo" (transmitting Taoist precepts and conferring religious titles) for practitioners from all over the country, and his reputation was widespread for a time.
He passed away due to illness in October of the 3rd year of the Chunxi era (1176). Emperor Xiaozong of the Song Dynasty specially conferred upon him the title "Mr. Zhengying" and posthumously awarded him the honorific title "Zhenjun Chongxu Guangmiao Zhengying" (the True Lord of Lofty Vacuity, Brilliant Wonder, and Righteous Response).
